The two major political parties vying for government, Labor and Liberal, have thrown millions of dollars of election commitments at Maitland during this state election campaign.
New schools, revamped facilities for youth, road works and a hospital have been promised.
The Liberal Party has described the seat as vitally important.
Opposition Leader Luke Foley had previously told the Mercury that the party’s candidate Jenny Aitchison needed to win Maitland for Labor to form government.
The Liberals have made $42,350,000 worth of promises for projects that would directly impact Maitland.
Labor has pledged between $98,173,500 and $98,673,500 for Maitland.
The largest of the Liberal Party’s commitments to Maitland include $25 million to begin building the Lower Hunter hospital at Metford in the next term of government and $7 million to extend dual lanes of the New England Highway further through Rutherford.
Labor’s big ticket promises include $65 million for a new high school in Maitland and a primary school in the city’s western suburbs and has said it would match the government’s commitment to dual highway lanes at Rutherford and money for the Lower Hunter hospital.
Steve Thomson (Liberal)
$25 million – begin construction of Lower Hunter hospital.
$7 million – extend dual lanes on New England Highway at Rutherford.
$5.3 million – expand Maitland and Kurri Kurri hospitals.
$3.8 million – build new ambulance station in Maitland area.
$1 million – upgrade Maitland PCYC.
$250,000 – repair Maitland Showground grandstand.

Jenny Aitchison (Labor)
$40 million – new high school in Maitland.
$25 million – new primary school in Aberglasslyn or Rutherford area.
$25 million – start work on Lower Hunter hospital.
$7 million – extend dual lanes on New England Highway at Rutherford.
$1-1.5 million – establish Hunter domestic violence court.
$100,000 – fix lights at Marcellin Park.
$51,000 – Maitland and Tenambit BMX tar berms.
$12,500 – grants for 20 students and four chaperons who will go to Gallipoli for the Anzac centenary.
$10,000 – a tourism sign for Morpeth.
