The first layer of concrete has been poured at the intersection of Broke Road and McDonalds Road in preparation for two roundabouts that will be installed at the junction.
Cessnock City Council staff estimate that more than 1300 cubic metres of concrete will be needed to complete the structures.
“These new roundabouts will be a substantial new feature to improve safety as well as manage traffic for commuters, tourists and concert goers,” the mayor of Cessnock, Cr Bob Pynsent, said.
Cr Pynsent and general manager Stephen Glen visited the site this week to see the progress.
“The sheer size and amount of concrete in the roundabouts is amazing, yet it is still in keeping with the landscape of the vineyards,” Cr Pynsent said.
Council staff considered the landscape of the area during the design phase to ensure the new road would not overpower the surrounding environment.
Work on Broke Road began in 2011 with a $20 million grant from the state government’s Hunter Infrastructure and Investment Fund.
Broke Road East, next to Lakes Folly, was the first area to be upgraded as part of the project.
Broke Road West has also been completed, with a new road surface and substantial drainage improvements between Harrigan’s Irish Pub and Oakvale Winery.
