Landfill at Mount Vincent Waste Management Centre is expected to be at capacity within the next five years, so Maitland City Council has been developing plans for a waste transfer hub and upgraded recycling facilities to deal with the region’s continuing stream of garbage.
Rubbish would be sorted at the waste transfer centre at the Mount Vincent site and then transferred to another location.
Council will hold a public forum at Maitland Town Hall from 4pm and 7pm today to brief residents on the progress of the plan and allow them to ask questions about the project.
Contractor GHD Consultants and council staff will provide information at the forum, which will focus on the design of the centre and environmental impact statement.
The centre would need development approval from council.
The state government recently gave council about $112,000 to build a new recycling facility for problem waste items such as chemicals, paint, fluorescent lights and gas cylinders.
Council will also introduce a fortnightly kerbside green waste collection across the local government area in July, 2016.
