The team’s 2015 campaign got off to a bumpy start on Saturday, with the Bulldogs beaten 32-24 by an impressive South Newcastle Lions.
After the game Bulldogs coach Phil Williams said silly errors in defence
played a part in his side’s disappointing loss.
“It was the mental side of the game, they need to keep in the contest,” he said.
“We were in the game for a long period of time against Souths.
“We’ve got the natural ability in the side, it’s just about sticking to a plan.”
The squad will need to sharply improve on Saturday when they face Lakes United Seagulls, who are flying high after an aggressive 19-12 win over Macquarie Scorpions in their opening match.
“I’m expecting a tough game, they’ve got some quality players,” Williams said.
“They have bought well in the off-season and have some danger around the ruck with Chris Adams and Brad Murray.”
Williams is pleased powerful Seagull fullback Honeti Tuha is again pulling on a Newcastle Knights jersey to play wing in the NSW Cup.
“If he’s with the Knights, that will help us,” Williams laughed.
The Bulldogs coach has spent part of the week in Ballarat, where he is watching daughter Rachel play basketball with the NSW Country side at the Australian Championships.
This Saturday’s first home game for the Bulldogs has been called My Kurri Jersey Day, with the club asking all supporters to attend the match in a piece of Bulldogs memorabilia and prizes will be on offer.
There will also be a special presentation to veteran Bulldogs prop Mick Campton, who celebrated his 200th match last week.
Grades start 11am on Saturday at Kurri Sportsground with first grade kicking off at 3pm.
