This has been a good thing, but as any runner will tell you, there are always challenges.
With that in mind, Maitland PCYC will host the first Maitland Running Forum on Friday, May 29.
The purpose is to encourage experienced and novice runners to continue their exercise safely, armed with good information to help prevent injury and increase enjoyment and success.
‘’When we start to train more than the body is used to, injuries can occur due to biomechanical faults, training errors or over enthusiasm,’’ event spokesman Dr Gary Smith said.
‘’Poor nutrition can slow progress, and being an individual sport, runners can at times experience social isolation.
‘’Unless we create goals or events to aim for, training can become a grind causing loss of motivation.’’
The forum will feature local experts who will speak on key exercise areas in a laid back question and answer format.
Smith, a local chiropractor will talk about the science of running.
David Dungavell will focus on the parkrun phenomenon.
Paul Humphries, from H Events, will cover physical preparation for performance, and local dietician Nicole Barber will discuss nutrition for runners.
“There will be something for all levels of runners,” Smith said.
“From those starting to think about running, to those who want to know how to avoid injuries, to those who want to perform to their best.’’
Further forums are planned for later in the year.
Entry is by gold coin donation, with the money to be donated to the PCYC.
