It’s an issue that residents say council is well aware of.
But when asked to outline a fix council told the Mercury this week that the matter required further investigation.
The bottom of Bourke Street last flooded in June 2007 when water could not flow through stormwater pipes beneath Athel D’Ombrain Drive fast enough.
“It’s disgraceful, the drainage here – council wants a reef up the bum,” Reg Morrison said.
“When they’ve built the road they haven’t put enough drainage in.”
The water came up to the Morrison’s front step and almost through the house.
Others were not so lucky.
Jane Lloyd-Jones and her family’s recently renovated home was flooded for a second time in eight years.
“Because the water couldn’t get away fast enough at Athel D’Ombrain Drive it has come straight through our house,” she said.
“After this we’ll probably be raising the house a couple of metres.”
A white ute was also inundated in the street.
Ms Green, like many of her neighbours, has questioned how the area would fare when developed as part of an affordable housing precinct.
“We’ve been flooded here probably more than anyone in [central] Maitland,” she said.
“Someone has to take responsibility for this and talk to the residents of [Bourke] street.”
Council infrastructure and works group manager Chris James issued a brief statement in response to resident concerns.
“Council will need to investigate this issue in further detail in consultation with the property owner,” he said.
