The Rotarians were spoken of in glowing terms by the mayor, a representative from the Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison’s office and Rotary dignitaries.
Doug Tilse joined the club 51 years ago. The vegetable farmer from Lorn was nominated by his fellow farmers.
“The sense of fellowship and the achievement from the donations were the big things I’ll take away,” Mr Tilse said.
Andy Percival joined in 1959 at the age of 29 and is the longest serving member of the club.
“Helping those who need it most is what Rotary is all about for me,” he said.
Ric Fry said he felt privileged when he was invited to join an organisation that counted Maitland’s most prominent community and business members among its ranks.
The second generation Maitland solicitor said he particularly enjoyed the challenge of making a positive difference.
“It seems like yesterday, time has passed so quickly but it’s been full of marvellous experiences,” Mr Fry said.
“Now we’re the old fossils in the back, giving advice but leaving the heavy lifting to the increasing number of young members.
“It fills me with hope for the future.”
My Fry echoed wise words he heard from a fellow Rotarian years ago.
“You must enjoy you work but you must also be challenged as you help people – challenge is what keeps members with us.”
