Maitland-ites were among the thousands of people who turned out at Broadmeadow Racecourse for a colourful start to their Sunday morning.
The third annual Colour Run was hosted by Newcastle Jockey Club and participants – including former Western Suburbs skipper Aaron Mahony, Sam Collison and Emma Murphy – jogged, walked and wheeled their way around the popular event.
Fundraising ride down the coast
Maitland’s Pete Hodgson continues his trek down the coast raising money for Tahlia Smith and awareness for Lyme disease.
Hodgy and his mate Stuey were last seen at Byron Bay on Sunday en route to Iluka and down to Woolgoolga on Monday night.
They will arrive home on Friday afternoon after stop overs at South West Rocks, Lake Cathie and Forster.
An event will be held at The George Tavern Green Hills to welcome them back about 3.30pm.
Red-nosed Rochow
It was a tough night out for Robbie Rochow and the Newcastle Knights on Friday, going down 44-22 to the Broncos in Brisbane and the East Maitland Griffins junior suffering a broken right forearm.
It had been all smiles just before that for Rochow, not only returning to the starting line up after an eight-week lay off from back surgery but also helping his sister Justine promote Sids And Kids annual Red Nose day fund-raiser.
Outstanding play
Maitland’s Simon Orchard scored what was described as an outstanding upright reverse in the Kookaburras 4-0 Hockey World League match against Poland in Belgium on Friday.
Whatever the name, the fourth and final goal was a cracker and is worth checking out on the reply, which can be found on YouTube.
White plays final game for Brumbies
A message to Nic White from Maitland Blacks president Ben Emmett following Saturday night’s 29-9 Super Rugby semi-final loss, which ended his career at the ACT Brumbies:
“On behalf of the Maitland Rugby Club we’d like to say congratulations to Nic White on an amazing career with the Brumbies.
“Nic has been an inspiration to many at Marcellin, especially to our juniors.
“Unfortunately the season ended without the Brumbies getting their hands on the silverware to send Whitey off in style.
“The Blacks wish Nic all the best for his rugby in France and hope to see him playing again in a Wallaby jumper soon!
“Have a safe and enjoyable time Nic.”
Another Maitland junior, Jeremy Tilse, also missed out on the Super Rugby silverware this year, but he did get his hands on something else.
Tilse, part of the NSW Waratahs squad defeated 35-17 in Sydney on Saturday night, was presented with a Blacks jersey by Nate Wetini recently.
Wetini gave Tilse the No.1 jumper to say thanks for his support while recovering from a head injury earlier this year.
Calm courts before the player storm
Thousands of junior netballers have converged on Sydney for the 2015 State Age Championships this weekend, including four teams from Maitland.
But before the courts were flooded with bibs, joggers and sideline coffees Kellyville looked quite serene in the calm of sunrise.
Well at least through the camera lens of Carolyn Bieman-King.
Baby face
Which 21-year-old NPL footballer was hit up for ID at the movies recently because the cinema attendant didn’t think he looked old enough to be viewing the MA15+ flick?
Assistant coach
Still on football and Anthony Richards has returned to the fray at the Maitland Magpies as assistant coach for Reece Thompson after steering the ship at Cooks Square Park for six seasons, including a grand final win in 2009.
Stick with the round ball
And round ball sports might be the way to stay for one wannabe-punter at the Weston Bears.
On a social outing at the Newcastle trots, $294 was left in the kitty by the time the last race came around.
One brash punter decided to put it all on the nose. Not on the favourite, but on a long shot with limited wins in a long career and no joy over the distance previously.
The horse finished second last.
Charity lunch with Mark Hughes
Finally, SE will be teaming up again with two-time Newcastle Knights premiership winner Mark Hughes as part of a charity fund-raising event on Friday.
Hughes will be the guest speaker and myself the MC at Bushranger Bar & Brassiere in Largs with donations going to brain cancer work at the Hunter Medical Research Institute.
Numbers Game: 1 – the Newcastle Rugby League competition point standing between the Maitland Pickers (5) and Kurri Kurri Bulldogs (4) following Saturday’s results.
Moment That Mattered: Heartbreaking two point loss for the Maitland Blacks after Dave Kennedy lands a penalty goal on the bell to put University ahead 25-23.
Quote: “I loved it and haven’t stopped since,” Gillieston Heights teenager Olivia Cameron said about her first encounter with baseball at Roy Jordan Sports Complex ahead of her two-week development tour of the US.
