The Bulldogs accounted for South Newcastle 22-18 at Kurri Kurri Sportsground on Saturday and are now two competition points outside fifth position, with six matches remaining in 2015.
Kurri Kurri share of last place with Central Newcastle on four points.
Maitland (5) and Macquarie (6) just above them.
The four clubs are battling it out for the final spot in the play-offs, with the top four having broken away – Lakes and Western Suburbs (12), Cessnock (11) and Souths (10).
And Bulldogs coach Phil Williams reckons it is achievable for his squad despite a tough start to the year.
“The way that the competition is, all the teams have a chance to make the five,” Williams said.
“Everybody can still beat each other, so everyone should win a few more games, so it’s looking like 10 or 12 points will get you into fifth.”
The Bulldogs begin their run home against Lakes at Cahill Oval on Saturday before hosting Macquarie on July 11.
This will be followed by encounters with Western Suburbs (July 25), Maitland (August 8), Central (August 15) and Cessnock (August 29).
