Premier Mike Baird and Transport Minister Andrew Constance unveiled the new pictures in Newcastle on Monday morning.
Mr Baird said the interchange was a key part of the government’s plan to revitalise Newcastle CBD.
“The state-of-the-art transport interchange will allow for the future development of Newcastle light rail that will help to reconnect the city with the foreshore,” he said.
The interchange is expected to open in 2017.
The government terminated trains at Hamilton station last September amid controversial plans to truncate the heavy rail line between Wickham and Newcastle stations.
A light rail network has been proposed to replace the heavy rail line.
But the plan has received some community backlash, particularly from many commuters from Maitland and the greater Hunter who say it will make it more difficult and time consuming for them to access services in the city.
The NSW Court of Appeal is deciding whether an Act of Parliament is needed for the government’s plan to remove the heavy rail infrastructure to go ahead.
