The 2014 Maitland Sportsperson of the Year crafted a cautious second-place finish during tricky conditions at Kyogle on Saturday, but dominating proceedings on Sunday to place the championship beyond doubt in the best possible way, with a big win.
It’s been a huge championship for Hunter riders with Josh Green, of Soldiers Point, in second.
The championship is the finishing touch to Price’s farewell season racing in Australia after he signed a dream contract with the KTM Factory Red Bull Rally Racing squad to focus on Dakar and the world Rally Championships for seasons 2016 and 2017.
Price was determined to put the title beyond doubt at Kyogle to remove the pressure for the final two rounds in three weeks time, and he did exactly that.
“We’re stoked. That’s the result we were looking for, and we had a good weekend,” Price said.
“Saturday I didn’t quite fire into gear straight away and there were a few mistakes.
“We weren’t allowed to walk the track and it was meant to be cross country, but it ended up being sprints, so I came in not too prepared on Saturday and it took me a little bit to get going.
“But we still had a pretty good result finishing second yesterday and coming away with the win today and my fifth Australian off-road championship is just a dream come true.
“It’s been a great year and I can’t thank the whole KTM team enough.
“Everyone’s been an awesome help this year and made it all that little bit easier for myself to worry about what I’ve got to do. So, yeah, unreal!”
