The new book is called Emerald Child which children in the US are studying as part of a reading program.
Emerald Child is set on a far away hidden island where smoke rises from an ancient chest buried in the sand.
When central female character Indie sees a boy’s face in the smoke, she is sure he will answer her questions.
But the boy, Kai, has a more desperate motive. He helps Indie escape from the island, knowing she is the only hope for Gort and the tree-dwelling Kalika people.
The books are suitable for children aged eight years and over.
Hughes is a mother of four and former lawyer who swapped the hard-core corporate life for a world of imagination and storytelling.
Her writing encourages children to find their own courage, creativity, wonder and the power within themselves.
Maitland Library has invited Hughes to host a find your spirit animal workshop for children at East Maitland Library on Tuesday, January 12, 2016, from 10.30am until 11.30am.
She will speak in the Look Who’s Talking program in April next year.
