The sides finished the under-15 knockout play-off match at 2-all with all goals scored between the 54th and 59th minutes at Speers Point on Wednesday.
Jacob Mosley struck first for St Peter’s at the Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility before Aleks Taleski responded immediately for the interstate visitors.
Two minutes later, St Peter’s were ahead again when Matt Fogarty netted in the 57th, before Aaron Anderson equalised once more for Maribyrnong in the 59th.
The drama-charged fixture then ended in a draw and the spoils for bronze were shared between the two schools.
This result followed losses for both outfits in semi-final encounters on Tuesday. St Peter’s were downed 8-0 by eventual champions Westfields Sports High and coach Phil Peate said the Maitland boys were simply beaten by a better team.
“They weren’t too bad after the game because we always said that if you get beaten by a better team that plays good football, then you can’t do anything about it,” he said. “And they were a top side that we played.”
Peate said it was a top achievement for St Peter’s to make the top four of the annual competition for the first time since 1999. even though they weren’t able to emulate the championships-winning performance of 11 years earlier in 1988.
“Just getting to here is a good effort,” Peate said. “The guys have really enjoyed being here the last couple of days.”
Sydney-select school Westfields went on to win their eighth Bill Turner Cup title on Wednesday with a 3-1 final victory over Queensland-based Ipswich Grammar, who beat Maribyrnong 2-1 in Tuesday’s semi-final.
Player of the series went to Luke Manifanas of Maribyrnong and player of the final was awarded to Rani Najjarine of Westfields.
