The tries, the cheers and the beers at a venue these blokes and many more have called home while donning the famous green and gold jersey of the Morpeth Bulls.
Glenn Wilks, Kevin McCarthy, Kevin Trowbridge, Greg Egar and Nick Callinan are among those men and they will come together once more this Saturday for a Bulls reunion at The Commercial Hotel.
Event organiser Michael Bourke said the emotions would be stirred for those at the club, which now fields junior teams but no senior side.
“The Morpeth Bulls reunion will tell stories and tales of yesterday,” he said.
“You’ll smell the liniment once more and you’ll hear the sound of studs on concrete.
“You’ll hear the crowd roar – from Lawler and Bowe, from Ward and Macarthy, to Burrows and Callinan – all local families who over the years have made this club great.
“We love this club of green and gold and may the stories be told forever more.”
The Morpeth Rugby League Football Club was formed in the early 1900s and enjoyed some success shortly after WWI.
Between 1924 and 1943 the Bulls played in the Newcastle Rugby League competition before merging with Maitland United and East Maitland to form the well-known Pumpkin Pickers.
The club has won several titles since including both A and B grades in 1962, three triumphs in four years between 1968 and 1971, before a triumphant 11-year era that produced five successes – 1984, 1990, 1991, 1993 and 1995.
Laurie Ward would arguably be the Bulls best success story after being selected for Australia when captain-coach of Morpeth.
Entry to the reunion is free. The event will run from 5pm and include raffles and auctions.
All former players and supporters are welcome to attend and are asked to bring along any old photographs.
