The society is a neighbour of the St John’s Cathedral, which is being refurbished, and rents rooms from the Maitland Newcastle Catholic Diocese.
“The cathedral precinct will be a great thing for Maitland,” society president Keith Cockburn said.
“From a historical society perspective we’re very much looking forward to the cathedral restoration.”
The society recently matched its verbal support with a donation.
The members raised $350 for the cause at a Bunnings barbecue.
The diocese has proposed to make space for the society inside the old Pro Cathedral.
“It’s a small sacrifice for the benefit of the city,” Mr Cockburn said.
“The diocese anticipates a considerable increase in tourism to the precinct.
“It’s reasonable to consider that there will be great benefit to Maitland when there are so many pilgrims around the world.”
A large forecourt is planned opposite St John’s where the society rooms now stand.
The forecourt is part of a cathedral precinct plan that has evolved from a $3.2 million renovation of St John’s and the Bishop’s House, announced in 2013.
The new stage hinges on Resources for Regions funds, but the diocese estimated the precinct could draw 23,000 visitors to the city each year.
Stories of past bishops would adorn history panels throughout a garden linked to the Hunter River and form a return walk from The Levee.
“We’ll do whatever we can to help tell the story,” Mr Cockburn said.
The society plans to hold another barbecue to further help the cause.
