Holding memories of baptisms, confirmations, weddings and funerals, St Luke’s Anglican, Church, has been an integral part of the Rutherford/Telarah community for more than 100 years.
This weekend parishioners will gather to commemorate the centenary.
Among them will be Colin and Marj Wood who have celebrated the sacraments of baptism, confirmation and marriage at the church.
“We were both baptised here confirmed here and on February 27, 1954, we were married here,” Mr Wood, 81, said.
The church was dedicated for service on April 13, 1912, and consecrated soon after. During the early 1980s the church was refurbished.
“We just have to be thankful to those who established the church and we’ve continued that on. But now we’re ready to hand it over to the younger ones and hopefully the church will go on for another 100 years,” Mr Wood said.
“Over the years things have evolved and there have been changes but basically the faith and dedication of the people hasn’t altered one little bit.”
The centenary of the church will be celebrated with a service by the Anglican Bishop of Newcastle Dr Brian Farran on Sunday at 9am.
