The biggest upset was Weston Bears’ 2-1 loss to Charlestown.
Maitland Magpies lost 2-1 to fellow Northern NSW NPL outfit Adamstown Rosebud.
The Lambton Jaffas flogged depleted Zone Premier League club Beresfield 10-1.
Magpies assistant coach Reece Thompson said the result was disappointing but the application of the players could not be faulted.
“We started poorly gifting two goals to one of our former players Alex Read, who signed with the Rosebuds this season,” Thompson said.
“Without four key players Ben Martin, Ryan Clarke, Mat Comerford and Matt Thompson it was going to be a tough task.
“In the second half we completely dominated. Unfortunately, Scott Carter their goalkeeper made some great saves and we were denied by the post a couple of times.
“Dean Heffernan managed to pull one back and we had chances to equalise but couldn’t take them.”
In other fixtures on Saturday Hamilton Olympic beat promoted Valentine in another clash of NPL top-division clubs.
Singleton beat Dudley 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes.
The Edgeworth Eagles, who lost 2-1 to A-League club Melbourne City in the round of 32 last season, beat Broadmeadow Magic 4-2 on penalties.
The Thornton Redbacks remain the Maitland district’s last chance of advancing in the FFA Cup.
The Redbacks face West Wallsend at Johnson Park, Wallsend, on Wednesday night.
On Tuesday night Belmont-Swansea host Jesmond at Blacksmiths.
