Singleton Council is calling for expressions of interest from members of the community who can speak for those currently affected by the flying fox issue at Burdekin Park.
Although, now Councillor Val Scott has gone on record stating she found a microbat the living room of her Boundary Street home, the “issue” now clearly extends beyond the historic park.
Council is seeking a reliable community representative to join the Mayor, Councillor Ruth Rogers and the general manager, to meet with the relevant state and federal ministers.
The desirable community representative will live in close proximity to Burdekin Park, and be directly affected by the flying fox issue.
Mayor John Martin says Council has resolved to review and amend Council’s Flying Fox Management Strategy in line with Office of Environment and Heritage Policy - and current community expectations.
“These plans and the delegation of members are being put together as a matter of urgency because of the recent closure of Burdekin Park and the impact the colony has had on the community,” says Cr Martin.
Meanwhile, despondent volunteers gained access to the Singleton Museum for the first time in three weeks on Tuesday.
A council staff member removed part of the barricade and escorted the group to the building. President Peggy Moore says it is the first time they have stepped inside the museum after being given no notice in regard to its closure.
“We were not given any prior warning,” she explains.
Community members interested in joining the delegation are asked to register their Expression of Interest in writing to the General Manager by Wednesday, April 13.
