Mr Sharpe arrived on the island paradise late Monday, to be greeted by torrential rain, strong wind and the threat of tropical cyclone Zena just hours away.
Fiji braced itself for Zena less than two months after Winston savaged the Pacific Island nation, and before many Fijians had even returned to their homes.
Zena was estimated to have winds of 120 kilometres per hour, and gusts of up to 170 kilometres per hour.
Evacuation centres opened and schools closed as the Fiji Meteorological Service warned of “very destructive hurricane force winds beginning several hours before the centre passes overhead or nearby”.
“The whole town was flooded and we were stranded at the airport for seven hours until really late,” Mr Sharpe said.
“It was pitch black outside and we were crammed into a tiny bus along with a five month old baby and three young kids, driving through flood water in the complete darkness trying to find accommodation,” Mr Sharpe said.
“There were definite moments of fear but it cold have been a hell of a lot scarier if the people weren’t so lovely.”
Mr Sharpe said people were worried the category of the cyclone would go up but fortunately it dropped from a category three to a category two before it hit.
“Fiji had already been hit with torrential rain which resulted in some serious flooding before the cyclone hit around midnight Wednesday,” Mr Sharpe said.
“We were advised on Wednesday night to quickly eat our dinner, return to our rooms for lock down and close the shutters.
Within a matter of hours, the tide turned and Mr Sharpe and his brother Matt hit the golf course.
“The wedding will still go ahead and the rest of the family and guests have started to arrive,” he said.
Mr Sharpe’s uncle, former Bolwarra man Dean Simpson, and his fiance Lisa Geyer of Melbourne will tie the knot on Saturday in Fiji.
