Lengthy debate over a land owner’s quest to build a large shed on land in Raworth has seen the majority of Maitland councillors vote against the development application, despite council staff recommending that it be approved.

The 25 metre shed, near the intersection of Brush Farm Road and Morpeth Road, backs onto residential houses that line Morpeth Road. Most of those residents don’t want the shed built near their back fence.
While Cr Steve Procter and Cr Philip Penfold urged their peers to realise it was a complying development, Cr Bob Geoghegan presented a list of reasons to refuse it, which he had created with council’s development manager David Simm before the meeting. Cr Geoghegan said he didn’t want to have to drive past the “eyesore” in years to come and was prepared to let the state government make the council approve it, if it came to that.
