Those manning the gate lost count around the time the 700th visitor and their furry companion cantered through the gates of Morpeth Common on Sunday morning.
Humans and dogs walked around a two kilometre track while others lazed on the grass in the unseasonably warm sun. Market stalls and live entertainment kept the crowds interested while special guests, including Lucky the dog who survived a brutal attack in Kurri Kurri last year, pitched in to raise thousands of dollars for the animal welfare organisation.
The nationwide event is the biggest single fundraiser for the RSPCA and raised more than $2 million in 2015.
As of Monday morning NSW alone had raised more than $230,000 online.
After donations at events including Morpeth’s are added to the total, the RSPCA expects the state’s total to top $500,000.
