To mark the 40th anniversary of the prestigious victory, players are organising a reunion which will be held in Maitland later this year. It is believed the Maitland Boys High School Under/14s side was the first and only Maitland team to win the trophy.
Reunion organiser Geoff McMahon said he is still trying to track down three players, Mark Goodwin, Gary Saunders and Neil Dark.
Maitland was crowned NSW’s best Under/14 rugby league side after it defeated Gunnedah 23-15 in the final of the state knockout on August 14, 1976. Maitland went through the competition, contested by 230 teams, undefeated.
Former Kangaroo and Roosters player David Trewhella was named standout player for Maitland in the final. McMahon said Trewhella was a late inclusion in the squad after he chose tennis as a school sport. His team mates however, talked him into joining the league side and dropping tennis.
Team members were: Geoff McMahon, Ray Smith, Wayne Clarke, Mick Doley, Myles Cameron, Craig Trowbridge, Alan Hodges, Scott Hurst, David Trewhella, Gary Sharp, Stephen Crockett, Geoff Burg, Craig Deamer and David Feeney. Mick Ford was coach and Alfie Adams was manager.
