While Pickers legend Terry Pannowitz took a dislodged brick from the pavilion named in his honour, crews started clearing the way for the 1100 seat grandstand that will have improved access and a significantly enhanced view of the playing field.
The facility will feature new change rooms, public amenities and canteen designed to cater for a range of sporting and community events.
Stage one is due to be completed in 2017 at a cost of $8.6 million.
The No. 1 Sportsground has hosted a number of significant events throughout its 80 year history.
These stories and individuals honoured in existing plaques and signage around the grounds will continue to be a part of the new grandstand forecourt.
Stage one of the redevelopment is funded by the Hunter Infrastructure and Investment Fund and Maitland City Council.
