The Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle and the Maitland Regional Museum have officially opened an exhibit that celebrates the history of Catholicism in the region.
The “pop -up museum”, which will occupy St John’s Hall on Cathedral Street until July 10, marks 150 years since Maitland’s first bishop – James Murray – was appointed.
More than 50 packed into the hall to hear St Joseph’s of Lochinvar Sister Patricia Egan speak on the importance of preserving history.
“Many of our relatives would have welcomed Bishop Murray to Maitland back in 1866,” Sister Egan said.
“It’s important to reflect on our past, to learn from our mistakes – and there have been many tragedies.
“But this is a wonderful display of life in our history.”
