The Blacks, one of Australia’s oldest rugby clubs, were included in the Merchant Taylor School’s tour of Australia after much hard work by Cameron Heazlewood.
All Heazelwood’s efforts paid off with a big crowd and a show of excellent rugby schools by the Merchant Taylor students and the Blacks under-16 and under-17 teams.
The Merchant Taylor School, established in 1561, is rated as one of the top nine schools in England and its senior 15 included England under-17 scrum-half Will Porter.
The Maitland Blacks juniors took the game right up to their well-drilled opponents.
Maitland Blacks president Ben Emmett said he hope it would be the start of a new tradition and could lead to overseas tours by Blacks junior teams in the future.
