Ducks and snakes all head to Maitland's The Levee to do their shopping

It seems even mother ducks have the chore of getting new school shoes for the kids each year.

A mother duck and her seven ducklings stopped in to iconic Maitland store Johnston's Shoes on the weekend, much to the amusement of staff and customers.

“I think they came in to have a look at our spring shoe collection,” owner Michael Johnston said.

Mr Johnston believed the shoe business, located in The Levee central Maitland, had never had customers quite like this before.

“We get the occasional bird stop in, but never a mother duck and her seven ducklings,” he said.

“They looked around, jumped in the window and had a look out. One even tried on a school shoe.”

In the end Mr Johnston escorted the family safely back to the river.

The Levee attracted other wildlife this week, when a snake was seen slithering near shops on Monday.

The eastern brown crossed the shared road before it traveled along the shop line and entered women’s fashion store Autograph.
