City United has swept their two opponents Western and Eastern Suburbs off the field with dominant batting and bowling displays.
Kurri Weston have had to dig deep and scrape home wins against Thornton Park and Raymond Terrace relying on grit and guts more than flair to get the points.
City’s top six have all scored 50s across their two matches and will no doubt relish the extra batting time of the first two-day game of the year starting at Kurri Central on Saturday.
Their bowlers have also been sharing around the wickets with Nick Bower’s 5-27 the best to date
Warriors skipper Michael Heinrich couldn’t be happier with his team’s start, although he would like to be making a bigger contribution with the bat.
Kurri Weston faced a mammonth task going into the season, with strike bowler Steve Abel, moving back to the Cessnock competition, No.3 batsman Jack Bennett gone for the season and star batsman Jake Gordon to miss the majority of games.
Heinrich has given his team a mantra of hard work and doing the one per centers and they are sticking to it, pulling themselves out of precarious situations several times with gritting innings by various players.
Josh Tuckwell has responded to the extra responsibilities and anchored Kurri’s innings with 73 last week against Raymond Terrace.
Heinrich said it was one of the gutsiest and best innings he had seen from Tuckwell and the batting order was able to make contributions around him to pass Terrace’s total.
He said Tim Harding’s return this season had been a godsend and his calming presence on field was just as valuable as his returns of two and three wickets.
Western Suburbs got their first win of the season last Saturday after a big loss to City first up. The host Eastern Suburbs at Coronation Oval in their two-dayer.
The Plovers shared the wickets and runs around last round against Thornton Park, with Luke Donnelly 4-28 the best with the ball and Aaron Mahony top scoring with 43.
Easts made a bright start to the season beating Northern Suburbs easily, but came crashing back to ground against City United last week.
The clash of East and West should give both teams a more accurate guide of their form.
Northern Suburbs are at home against Raymond Terrace and both teams are chasing their first wins of the season.
Big things are expected of both teams this year with all-rounder Tim Prescott returning to Norths line-up after a successful stint in Newcastle and Jaymes Thomas rejoining Terrace.
