On Sunday afternoon the hundreds of people poured through the doors of the Grand Junction Hotel to listen to live music and crack open their wallets for a man most of them had never met.
By the end of counting more than $5300 had been pooled together for the Lennox family.
“It was brilliant, absolutely brilliant,” Mr Lennox’s wife Carla said.
“We’ve only lived in Maitland for about three years so we don’t know that many people. We certainly didn’t expect [so many].
“We were blown away.”
Publican of the Grand Junction, Ben Quinn, contacted the family after reading about their plight in the Mercury earlier this year.
“We’d never even met Ben and [his wife] Mel before,” Mrs Lennox said.
“But Ben got up there between every act and asked the community to pull together for us.
“All the musicians came up to us and wished us well.
“I’ve got no words.”
Mr Lennox could not be present at the Maitland event as his family, based in Casino, were hosting another fundraiser for him.
When Mr Lennox’s current round of chemotherapy wraps up in November, the family will face the daunting prospect of paying between $200,000 and $300,000 for a type of treatment not listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.
“In November we’ll have a scan and see how this round of chemo has gone,” Mrs Lennox said.
“Then we’ll have to have serious talks about where this money will go.”
Mrs Lennox said the chemotherapy was the only thing keeping her husband alive and he had lost 30kg since treatment began.
Despite the challenges, she said her husband was in good spirits.
“All the fundraisers and upheaval has been hard on the kids,” she said.
“We’re just looking forward to leading into Christmas with a bit of normalcy.”
