Six-year-old Tom Faul felt a strong tug on his line while fishing on Saturday.
His dad Jay went to give him a hand, and together they pulled out a 60 centimetre long, 3.25 kilogram bass.
Mr Faul said he did some research and asked around and he has not heard of anyone catching a bass of that size anywhere.
He said he has been fishing since he was a teenager, but was astounded by the size of this fish.
“It was the biggest I’ve seen,” he said.
Mr Faul said Tom and his nine-year-old brother Jed were “ecstatic” to have caught the “whopper”.
Ironically, the catch was made on the same weekend, in the same river as a fishing competition organised by the Commercial Hotel Morpeth.
