It’s a delight farmer Matthew Dennis looks forward to every year. He’s been growing Christmas trees to sell since he was 16.
He says the real thing adds a special touch to the festive celebrations and it’s becoming a popular trend in Maitland.
“We have people who come back every year because they won’t have anything else for their tree,” he said.
“Families come and walk through to pick their tree, some people take longer to pick it than others – it depends what they’re looking for.”
Mr Dennis said a pine tree lasted up to three weeks in the house if it was looked after. It is best to put the tree in a bucket with sand and bricks and give it some water and a little sugar, he said.
“The smell will go through the house and a lot of people like that because they associate it with Christmas – you can’t beat it,” he said.
