Ms Rees was presented the award at a Women’s Network Hunter NSW dinner for International Women’s Day on Friday night.
State member for Maitland Jenny Aitchison selected Ms Rees for the award, saying she had done great things for the community on a grass-roots level.
“What we’re looking for in these awards are not just the high flyers in the community who have high profiles,” Ms Aitchison said.
“I think it’s important to recognise women who are doing the grunt work, who are there day after day helping the most disadvantaged and vulnerable in our communities.”
Ms Aitchison mentioned the numerous projects Ms Rees has organised through the neighbourhood centre, including assistance for people affected by the 2015 and 2016 floods, and most recently, the boredom busters program for kids during the school holidays.
