Now, the Hughes family – mum and dad, sons Zac and Dane, daughter Bonnie and dog Teddy – are putting the final touches on the same property, converted into a five-bedroom split-level residence with extended balcony, open-living, dining and kitchen area and gym and steam room downstairs.
“We always had dreams of making it into our dream home,” says Mark Hughes, a former Newcastle Knights rugby league star.
The Hughes’ dream home is the cover story in a special HOME edition of the Newcastle Herald Weekender magazine this Saturday, dedicated entirely to trends and ideas for home living in the Hunter Region.
Home writer Jacqui Jones offers a piece on building and interior design trends as well as a story about a Mayfield family’s solar energy installation.
Historian Mike Scanlon surveys the Hunter’s greatest historic mansions, including Jesmond House, Belltrees and Minimbah House.
Trending columnist Linley Wilkie provides a colourful double-page spread looking at the latest garden goodies.
And we provide another look at 10 outstanding dwellings featured as Weekender’s popular “Home of the Week” over the last year.
The Domain property liftout will be wrapped inside the Weekender, providing an opportunity to act on those dreams.
