Challenge Disability Services Connexions program is available to local residents living with a disability, aged 18 to 35, who have low support requirements. It provides participants with the opportunity to spend time with people their own age while taking part in a range of skill-building and social activities.
Connexions has been running successfully in Tamworth for the past four years. Participants such as Nicole, pictured, are given the opportunity to learn life and work skills, valuable training that has led to her receiving a position at a local laundry service. According to Nicole, she has lots of fun at Connexions, making new friends as well as learning.
"We make timber products such as dog kennels and pallet boxes; I've learnt lots of new skills," Nicole said. “I am looking forward to getting settled in my new job, it will be nice to make some more new friends.”
Life skills activities provide participants with the tools they need in their day-to-day life and include lessons in cooking, shopping, fitness and gardening. There’s ample opportunity to socialise, with sporting teams, bushwalking, art and even take a class to improve social skills all on the agenda.
Classes are available in computer literacy and job applications as well as the Business Club to provide hands-on experience in business basics to prepare participants for the workforce. Connexions can also help participants get a driver's licence; Nicole is hoping to get her Ls soon and is saving up to buy a car.
“My support worker Kym helps me practice online so I can prepare for the Ls test and she will also help me with the paperwork for the application,” she said.
The Connexions program is eligible for NDIS funding, providing the chance for 18 to 35-year-olds with low support needs to gain essential work, social and life skills with people their own age.
