Newcastle 15-year-old Luke Young has beaten a quality field to win the Maitland Mile in a time of four minutes and 25 seconds.
It was a family double with his sister Kathleen the first woman home in a time of 5min:47. Mitchell Olbrecht was second in the Mile, nine seconds behind Young, after winning the 4km event.
Hundreds of competitors lined up to participate in the Maitland River Run and The Maitland Mile on Sunday.
Runners took-on three laps of the Central Maitland course (12km), two laps (8km) or one circuit (4km) before the Maitland Mile.
The 4km was a family affair as well with Olbrecht finishing narrowly ahead of his father Thomas.
Young said he had only run a mile once before, but enjoyed 1500 metre running.
He said his strategy was to go out fast and assess how he was feeling at the halfway mark.
“I looked over my shoulder and saw I was clear of the pack, so I decided to press on and push as hard as I could to the end,” he said.
Young trains in Newcastle and has made NSW athletic teams in distance running and is in training for the Australian cross country titles.
Young and Olbrecht finished ahead of 2016’s winner Jesse Mawell, who was third, and former winners Simon White and Michael Phillips.
In the other distances, Kaitlin Fuchs was the women’s winner in the 4km with a time of 16min:42sec.
The 8km was won Paul Himberger in a time of 27:04, with Colleen West the women’s winner finishing the distance in 34;05sec.
Chris Fuchs won the 12km event in a time of 43:36. The women’s winner was Shayne Fulkenmire who clocked 49:56.
