Staff reported to police that they witnessed the man put two meat items down his pants last Thursday. They approached him when he went to pay for a box of tissues at a checkout.
Staff took the man to an office, but he allegedly fled the room and ran up a flight of stairs.
Police said he then jumped off the roof and ran away.
Central Hunter crime manager Detective Inspector Radmore said the man contacted police minutes later and told them what he had done. He then handed himself in at Maitland Police Station.
The man suffered arm and leg injuries after he jumped from the roof. Police called an ambulance and issued the man with a court attendance notice.
