A free seminar at Maitland Private Hospital next week is set to show sufferers how they can manage the condition in the short and long term so they can lead an active life.
Senior physiotherapist Chia Yei Loh said there were several reasons behind the condition and patients needed to know that help was available.
Placing patients in a pair of inflatable trousers is one of the latest techniques to help reduce swelling and ease the symptoms.
“This free seminar has been developed for anyone who has accumulation of fluid in one or more regions of their body (even if they are unsure if they do suffer from Lymphoedema), anyone who has recurrent cellulitis on their limbs and family or carers of patients with Lymphoedema. The true risk factor profile for lymphoedema is unknown but there may be many factors that predispose an individual to developing lymphoedema. These include surgery with lymph node dissection, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, cancer, orthopaedic surgery, obesity, immobilisation, prolonged limb dependency and many more. Unfortunately, there are limited resources around the Hunter region for those living with lymphoedema,"

Lymphoedema happens when there is an excessive amount of fluid in an area of body tissue. It is a chronic condition, but, symptoms can be alleviated with the right treatment.
As symptoms progress it has a physical and physiological impact on the body.
The hospital has started offering outpatient lymphoedema treatment and management with a physiotherapist who specialises in this field to help sufferers improve their health.
There has previously been limited support for people in the Hunter who have the condition.
The seminar will be held on Tuesday, June between 5:50pm and 6:30pm.
