A poll conducted by Fairfax Media revealed more than 60 per cent of readers would like to see the installation of CCTV, while others supported more police patrols and the employment of security guards.
Cr Burke said the results show that people are concerned about law and order and personal safety.
Councillors were recently briefed on crime prevention and community safety and a report on that briefing, including recommendations, are expected to be part of next week’s council agenda.
The recent destruction of landscaping at Maitland’s newly refurbished No. 1 Sportsground prompted Cr Burke to ask the community how they felt about security in the city centre and whether or not the installation of CCTV was the answer.
The poll revealed that 62.82 per cent of respondents wanted CCTV, 21.79 per cent called for more police patrols, 11.54 per cent thought security guards would be the answer and 3.85 per cent believe nothing additional should be done to improve security.
“The results of the survey go to show that the community is concerned about the protection of property and law and order, along with their own personal safety,” Cr Burke said.
“It’s also a clear indication that people are concerned about what going on in the town and protecting themselves as well as the city’s assets,” he said.
