A policy outlining guidelines for mobile food vending vehicles in public places across the city will be discussed at a Maitland City Council meeting this week.

Maitland City Council’s mobile food pilot program Street Eats incorporated food vans which offered a range of different culinary delights at parks in Maitland, Morpeth, East Maitland, Rutherford and Thornton throughout February, March and April this year.
The idea came from feedback to council’s Place Activation Strategy, which found that hundreds of locals said they wanted to see food trucks, pop up food and coffee vans bring the streets of Maitland to life.
Council’s Place Activation Officer Amber Herrmann, said in a report to councillors that the Street Eats Program enabled council to better understand the potential for public place activation in the form of mobile food trucks.
“Beyond the issuing of approvals to operate mobile food vehicles in public spaces, the program was successful in activating a number of key sites across Maitland, created opportunities for community connections and provided a platform for business growth,” Ms Herrmann said.
She said Street Eats was seen to be a great addition to the public space of Maitland and a new opportunity to bring a diversity of people out into their community. “The community embraced a new variety of foods and the unique outdoor food truck experience,” Ms Herrmann said.
At the meeting councillors will also discuss plans for the Hunter Arts Network ‘Art Bazaar Pop Up’ to be held in The Levee on August 12. It will consist of about 60 stalls.
