The 32-year-old man and his 34-year-old sister were at the woman’s home in the early hours of Friday morning.
Police allege the pair became involved in an argument before the woman asked her brother to leave.
The man left but allegedly returned about 15 minutes later with a plastic jerrycan containing petrol. He is alleged to have lit the nozzle of the container on fire, police said.
The woman was abused and threatened before she went outside and approached her brother.
Police claim the man threw petrol on his sister and threatened to burn her.
Other people came to the woman’s aid and called triple-0. Paramedics attended and treated the woman at the scene. She did not require further treatment in hospital.
When police arrived, it is alleged the man ran away. Police and the dog squad searched the area before they arrested the man in a nearby street.
The 32-year-old man was taken to Maitland Police Station and charged with assault, intimidation and throwing a corrosive liquid with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm.
He was granted conditional bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court in October.
