Police and ambulance were called out about 7.30pm last Wednesday to reports of a domestic disturbance in Lawson Avenue.
When officers arrived they found a 30-year-old woman who had suffered lacerations to both hands.
Police were told the woman and her 30-year-old male partner became involved in an argument during the evening before she suffered the injury.
The woman was attempting to protect herself when her hands were stabbed, police said.
After the incident the woman ran to a neighbours house for assistance. The neighbours called triple-0.
Paramedics transported the woman to John Hunter Hospital for treatment.
The man was not at the home when police arrived. He was later arrested in Frewin Avenue, Woodberry.
The man was taken to Maitland Police Station and charged with reckless wounding and domestic violence related assault offences.
He was refused bail to appear in Maitland Local Court on Thursday.
