Telarah Newsagency owner Bruce Toghill was working at the store about 5.30am Friday when a masked man entered with a knife and demanded cash.
“He was yelling out like a two-bob watch,” Mr Toghill said.
Rather than handing the money over, Mr Toghill picked up a stapler and chased the bandit out of the shop.
The offender ran down Telarah Street onto Onus Street where he got into a dark Holden Commodore.
Mr Toghill said he was lucky the offender didn’t react, but that he worked “too long and hard” to hand his money over to a robber.
It’s the first time the newsagency has been targeted in the four years Mr Toghill has owned it.
Police are investigating the incident.
The offender was described as 20-25 years old, 175cm, medium build, wearing a balaclava, dark clothing and a backpack.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
