The new room includes an adjustable change table and ceiling hoist to make it easier for people with disabilities to use the bathroom.
Maitland mother Susie Lane, whose daughter Claire has a form of epilepsy called Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, was instrumental in the centre installing the facilities.
She emailed Stockland requesting an inclusive amenities room in the upgraded centre, explaining the struggle she had trying to maneuver Claire in a disabled toilet.
Ms Lane said she would have to lay Claire on the floor to help change her, or take her back to their van, which offered no privacy.
“There are so many people fighting to get this into places,” she said. “A lot of disabled people need to be able to lay down.
“The adult change room allows me to address my daughter’s needs with dignity and privacy, something which every person deserves. We’re so grateful.”
Stockland Green Hills centre manager Chris Travers said it was fantastic to see Ms Lane’s reaction.
“It really struck a chord when we heard what it was like [for people with disabilities],” he said. “It’s so satisfying to see what a difference we can make.”
In November, the centre will open another parents room and a dedicated quiet room, offering a safe place for parents, carers and children with Autism. The room will provide a calm, low sensory environment, which can be used as a retreat away from the busy shopping centre.
