KerryAnn Turner’s four-year-old NZ gelding I Am Serengeti won the final heat from Clayton Harmey’s Jimmy The Editor and Ellalong trainer-driver Michael Formosa’s Mondooley Heaven.
Formosa and Bates are the only former winners with horses in the final.
The first three place-getters in each heat and the fastest fourth-placed horse qualified for the 10-horse final on Saturday, December 30.
