A daring thief has used a small window of opportunity to steal a ute in Rutherford while its owner was mere meters away unlocking a gate.

The male victim had jumped out of the grey Holden Commodore momentarily to unlock the gate at his Spitfire Drive workplace on Wednesday.
While he was tending to the lock, another man hopped in the vehicle and drove off shortly before 6.30am.
The thief was followed closely by another man driving a green Holden Commodore ute with green p-plates.
The victim immediately called police, who patrolled the area and circulated the registration number via police radio. However, the offender was not found.
The thief was described as Caucasian, about 185cm and wearing khaki cargo pants. The driver of the green Holden Commodore was described as a Caucasian male.
The registration of the stolen vehicle was BVN-96D.
Police will canvass the area in the search for CCTV footage and other witnesses and urge anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
