Police believe rubbish was deliberately thrown onto the New England Highway at Metford on Saturday morning by someone who then hid close-by to watch the carnage unfold as cars approached.
Several cars suffered heavy damage as a result of hitting the dangerous items, with flat tyres and damaged radiators among the reports to police.
It is not the first time this sort of thing has happened in the area – police received reports of rubbish left in the same spot on the highway back in January.
“If people go placing rubbish on the road, it can lead to a fatality,” Maitland police officer in charge Chief Inspector Glenn Blain said.
“It’s very dangerous.”
