Major upgrades to the grandstand, however, are likely to be finished slightly earlier – if weather permits.
The work, which began last year, involved the demolition of the old grandstand at the Maitland Pickers’ home ground and the construction of a new, 1000-seat stand with improved access, new facilities and a better view of the playing field.
Renewed facilities will include change rooms, public amenities and a canteen designed to cater for a range of sporting and community events.
The grandstand looked to be close to complete when Fairfax Media visited the site last week, with seating already installed, and the playing surface has been laid.
“Construction of the grandstand is likely to be completed by March, 2017,” Maitland City Council’s Senior Project Architect Ben Griffin said last week.
“Coloured grandstand seating has been installed and the public forecourt is close to complete.
“Field reconstruction is progressing well and, depending on growing conditions, turf should be available for use by the middle of the year.”
Fairfax Media reported last year that the major upgrades were jointly funded by the Hunter Infrastructure and Investment Fund and Maitland City Council.
The HIIF has made a $5.6 million contribution towards the $8.6 million project.
