Numerous Facebook groups has sprung up in the last few years, all celebrating the humble party staple the cob loaf. The most active being the ever popular ‘Cob Loaf Memes’ Facebook page – with over 23,000 followers. So it comes as no surprise that a festival dedicated to the Cob Loaf would attract plenty of attention online. As soon as the announcement was made and the Wellington Times published the first story, it was quickly shared around Australia, garnering thousands of shares, likes and comments across social media. Such was the news’ popularity that it attracted the attention of the folks at Triple J, leading to a collaboration between the Wellington Times and Triple J Breakfast hosts, Ben & Liam. Liam’s mother, Leanne Stapleton has a cob loaf recipe that while unconventional – it has no cheese – potentially has what it takes to be crowned ‘COB Loaf World Champion’ by the judges at the Wellington COB Loaf Festival – one of which being Wellington Times journalist, Elouise Hawkey. So, a conversation on-air surrounding what makes an ideal cob ended with a decision that someone must be sent as a Triple J representative to the cob festival with a cob in hand. You can see all the photos below. At the competition, while Leanne’s cob was a hit, it wasn’t popular enough to win people’s choice nor the judges vote. But that doesn’t mean it didn’t have some fans  – some people travelled to Wellington to attend the festival after they had heard about it on Triple J. One fan even asked to be photographed with the famous loaf. Wellington Times journalist, Elouise Hawkey spoke to Ben and Liam after the festival to break the news that their cob recipe wasn’t crowned number one and Fairfax Digital journalist Ben Palmer interviewed Triple J cob taste-testers and shared their reactions with Ben and Liam.
