Outgoing Magpies coach Anthony Richards has called on Maitland to get behind the club after all three grades booked First Division grand final berths over the weekend.
Richards’ first grade side coasted to a 4-1 win over Belmont Swansea in the second leg of their semi-final after winning the first leg 2-0.
Tyson Fletcher put the Magpies ahead in the first half after a driving run into the goal area and Chris Broadley made it 2-1 after Belmont Swansea had equalised late in the first half.
Striker Ben Martin finished into an open net on the hour mark to extend Maitland’s lead and Ryan Broadley sealed the victory with a fourth.
Maitland now face off against Adamstown in the grand final after Rosebuds won 3-0 in the second leg of their semi-final against West Wallsend to go with their 4-0 first-leg win.
The grand final will be held on Sunday at Adamstown Oval and Richards said he expected a large Maitland contingent to travel in support.
“We played down there a couple of weeks ago and [Adamstown coach] Glen Chapman said half of Maitland had come down to watch,” he said.
“This time, I want the other half down there as well.”
Aggregate wins for the Magpies’ under-23 and under-19 teams ensured it will be a big day for the club on Sunday.
A 5-0 win for the under-23s completed an 8-0 aggregate win over Thornton and will now meet Belmont Swansea in the decider.
The under-19s went down 2-1 to Cessnock, but also progressed through to the grand final with a 4-3 aggregate win, meaning they’ll meet Thornton.
For Richards, who announced at the beginning of the finals series that this season would be his last at Cooks Square Park, wins in all three grades would be the ultimate sign-off.
“It would be a dream come true,” he said.
“To get all three grades is a massive result, and speaks volumes of everyone involved with the club.”
