After being removed for repairs to one of his knees, the mammoth canine has finally made his way back into the grounds of the Maitland Regional Art Gallery.
The work of Australian artists Gillie and Marc Schattner, and inspired by their golden retriever Moby, Fetch Boy is a three-metre artwork loaded with an environmental message.
“Globally we tackle environmental issues and wrestle with corporations and countries to adopt better ideals to save our planet. Yet we can’t even pick up our own dog poo,” the artists said in a statement.
Coveted by galleries in London and New York, Fetch Boy has now found a home at Maitland.
As contemporary artists, the Schattners believe it is the duty of artists to push boundaries, to challenge the status quo and cause change.
The sculpture of a suit-wearing dog picking up its own poo has certainly had the desired effect with people concerned about the recent departure of the sculpture.
The return of Fetch Boy will be celebrated with a pooch picnic at the gallery on August 24.
