“Live to love the pain,” she said.
Ekert, Mick Lewis and the Fleming brothers Anthony and Greg, will form part of a strong Hunter contingent to take part in this year’s 1000Ks 4 Kids.
The fourth annual Camp Quality fund-raiser rolls off from Mittagong on Friday and finishes 10 days later in Newcastle on September 14.
And while this quartet are anything but avid cyclists, they are willing to use pedal power as a way to support children with cancer.
“This is nothing compared to what the kids and parents go through,” Greg said.
Greg has flown in from Victoria to join younger Bolwarra-based brother Anthony on the charity ride.
“I just wanted to do something to help out kids with cancer and this was it,” Anthony said.
This will be Anthony’s second crack at the event, while Lewis will be going around for a third straight year.
“Kids deserve a good childhood and to be happy,” Lewis said.
“Camp Quality helps give that back and to help those with cancer feel like kids again.”
Ekert will also be riding alongside her father and brother, following in the tracks of other brothers in previous years.
About 40 cyclists and 20 support crew will participate in this year’s ride averaging 100 kilometres a day and visiting schools along the way.
Camp Quality are aiming to raise $300,000 from the event.
